The measurable flame out

Unless you've been under a rock, you've heard of the JetBlue flight attendant who quit in the most awesome way possible earlier this week.  The incredible part of this story isn't the fact that this guy lived out EVERY customer facing person's fantasy, but that- in the age of social media- this affinity has a measurable result... in this case in money.  Yes, believe it or not, thousands of dollars have been raised to support the disgruntled flight attendant via Facebook.

Now we've all had moments where we want bash a client/customer, employer, business, or that snotty jerk that ruined dinner by being so rude (ahem). While we may not have a captive audience, public address system, an emergency slide, and easy access to beer- in this social world we have many amazing channels to easily flame.  The real question becomes "Should we?".  I would argue, that the greater your reach and influence the greater your responsibility to shut up and take it.

What do you think?  Do you have a calculation for the value of your social networks? Have you ever calculated the value of your endorsement/denouncement?

Here I go, again!

After a year and a half of hiatus of blogging about anything besides food and sports, I've decided to get off the bench and wade into the business of business blogging.  Most of the credit for this decision goes to Aaron Strout, CMO of Austin's own Powered Inc and author of one of my favorite (and most prolific) blogs Citizen Marketer 2.1.

While I do focus on measurable marketing via online channels and social media, I intend to look at real work issues and trends through my particular lens.  In my time in marketing I've worn many hats, so don't be surprised if I weigh in on topics that maybe out of my described bailiwick.
